Youtube and blogging
Here are all the things that I use to make my channel and my website/blog a reality! But before you start scrolling, I just want to say, if you are just starting, know that you really don't need anything to start! You can film from your webcam or your phone and use free software like iMovie to edit! When I first started, I filmed using a cheap flipcam I found on ebay and I edited with iMovie. I slowly upgraded my equipment based on needs and means (if I could afford it)!
Cameras and Filming
Sony a5000 (late-December 2017 - present)
Recently acquired this beauty second-hand but in perfect condition. It's a mirrorless camera which came with a 16-50mm Power Zoom Lens. It's great because lenses are interchangeable and it's also small and portable enough that it's perfect for vlogging! So far the skin correction is out of this world and the image and sound quality are better than with any of my previous cameras.

Canon EOS Rebel T5i (December 2014 - present)
I purchased my first DSLR a few years back and it did a good job! it was a big upgrade from the flipcam I had been using the previous years. It was an amazing investment, I got to learn a ton of things like ISO and aperture. The sound quality is not the best but the image is really good the flip screen is perfect and overall it's a great first large investment! |
Sony WX500 (December 2015 - December 2017)
This point-and-shoot was a good investment! It was pretty cheap, probably one of the cheapest for the features. It had good audio and a very powerful zoom (30x Optical Zoom). The image quality wasn't the best, but you get what you pay for. One good touch is that is was one of the few cheap cameras with a tiltable screen, perfect for vlogging. |
iPhone SE
I use my iPhone very occasionally to record vlog clips if I don't have a camera on hand, but also use it almost religiously to record vocal in the voice memo app when I film with my Canon T5i because the sound quality is better on the phone than the camera built-in mic! Shameless Maya taught me that trick! |
Cowboy Studio Lighting Umbrella Set
I very rarely use these anymore because they are quite large and it's too time-consuming to mount every single time I film a video, but they were a life saver when I lived in a basement and had virtually no natural lighting and they do come in handy every once in a while! They were pretty cheap and do a really good job! |
Computer and Software
Final Cut Pro X
I started using Final Cut Pro several years ago after upgrading from the free Apple software iMovie. It has a lot of very useful feature but can be a bit harder to navigate if you are brand new to video editing! I love that the possibilities are pretty much endless if you learn the right things! |
